During the monsoons, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, which average 15 metres above sea level, are filled with standing waters. There are also sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary and a breeding ground for some of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos. The famous Indian Bustards, a critically endangered bird is also found around the Lala Bustard Sanctuary.
